We sat down with last week’s Daring Designer, Kiley Jacob to learn more about her inspiration, aesthetic and mission as a designer. Check out her paint pants in our previous post!
Q: What inspired you to become a designer?
There was an article I read about a girl who created her own prom dress and was being horribly bullied on social media for being “ugly.” Two designers discovered her and decided to create the look and have her walk in their runway show. I have always believed in the power of clothing and think that a garment stands for so much more than fashion. It has the power to empower and tell a story. I have always loved clothing and thought “how amazing would it be if one day you could impact lives with your passion?”
Q: How would you describe your design mission?
My mission is to create clothing that people feel a connection with for whatever purpose they see fit. I personally love designing “cool” things that are wearable and have unique design details such as a pocket or type of finishing.
Q: How do your customers inspire you? What else inspires you?
I think it is my job as a designer to be able to balance personal esthetic with customer feedback. Listening to how or why someone does or does not like something helps me become a better designer. I am inspired by many things: art, photography, books. I am also inspired by the culture around me, what people are wearing while I walk around NYC.
Q: If you could have dinner with any other designer, living or dead, who would it be?
Q: What are you working on right now?
I am working on more zero waste concepts/ more focus on sustainability!
